Viewing the world through more than 2 eyes

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Posted by Matt and Debz On December - 17 - 2009

kl The last new destination on our big adventure itinerary had finally arrived. The modern and vibrate city of Kuala Lumpur, affectionately shortened to ‘KL’.

Our cute little ‘Anjung guesthouse’ happened to be next to all the other guesthouses we’d ever found online or in our guide book. Right near many descent budget restaurants and just a short 10 minute walk to the heart of the city called ‘KLCC’.

kl-2 We spent our first afternoon wandering around the base of the iconic ‘Petronas Twin Towers’. The 451.9 metre tall, 88 storey skyscrapers linked together by the ’skybridge’. We headed in to the shopping mall below for a drink and a wander in an environment in serious contrast to the serenity of the Cameron Highlands.

It was a fun hour or so wandering through the 6 floors of the massive mall actually getting into the Christmas spirit with the abundance of mall sized decorations and over the top Santa’s Grotto. We even discovered a Marks and Spencer shop where we bought some mince pies and sat in the park looking at the twin towers, munching our festive treat in 32C heat!

Muzium Negara in KLA visit to a museum or two is always fun in a big city and the ‘Muzium Negara’ or ‘National Museum’ is the perfect place to brush up on your Malaysian history. The museum boasts 4 historical “zones” reaching back tens of thousands of years to the first known inhabitants of the country. A ludicriously heavy rain storm gave us time to visit the Orang Asli exhibition too which focuses on the indigenous people of Malaysia and the natural medicines found in Malaysia’s rain forests.

kl-3 After deciding we should “tick the box” that is the Petronas tower’s “Sky bridge” we got up early and headed down to the queue at 8:30am. Tickets are free but there are only 1500 available for each day. By the time we arrived there were around 800 people already waiting in a rather crammed and area in the buildings below the tower. After 90 minutes we somehow managed to get a time slot that was just minutes away. First you watch a video from Petronas telling you how wonderful Oil is for our children and our children’s children, etc. All in gloriously unwatchable 3D that’s sure to give you a headache. kl-6 Then it’s off to the service lift which rockets you up to the 42 floor in a little over 30 seconds. Once there you’re free to wander around the sky bridge and admire the view. It’s a pretty impressive view too as you walk between two of the world’s biggest skyscrapers. Your time is up all too soon, just enough time for a few photos before it’s back in the lift! When you’re back on the ground floor there is an interesting video on the making of the towers and you can also watch a model of them get struck by lightning!

We thought we’d keep with the “Oil is great” theme for the afternoon and ventured in to “Petrosains” on the 6th floor of the shopping mall. A science museum or “discovery centre” as they like to call it which makes no apologies for being biased towards the wonder that is Oil. Despite this it’s a fun 3 hours spent pressing buttons, learning about how oil rigs work and traveling around in a big blob of oil. We left convinced oil is the future! kl-10 Well maybe not but no doubt it works on some people.

Our time in KL was short and sweet. We enjoyed our stay and hope to explore the city and it’s surroundings more next time. It’s a very accessible city and a fitting end to our travels through new countries. We’ve loved our time in Malaysia with friendly locals, easy going atmosphere and stunning scenery.
