Arriving at Hue train station a full 45 minutes before our train was supposed to arrive was, in hindsight, a bit overkill. Especially considering it’s now an hour and half after the train was supposed to arrive and there’s still no sign. Men and women of all ages squat sit on the floor. I tried it once. My knees gave way in about 30 seconds!
Update: we’re now on the train which apparently broke down just outside of Hue. Getting on was eventful as everyone, including those who aren’t even traveling, make a mad scramble to board. Deb’s “wide elbow” technique worked well and watching men clamber over chairs and bags to disembark a moving train after helping their relatives find their seat was particularly amusing.
So now we trundle along to Danang in central Vietnam bound for a taxi ride to Hoi An. The scenery is
pretty as we hug the coast at times, passing ramshackle towns and ornate temples along with palm trees and water buffalo.
It seems a shame to snooze with such a vista but I fear it is inevitable after another late night drinking with more new friends and even some old new friends!
